Antarvedi Fish Market

At the end of my recent trip to India, my dad and I visited a fish market that takes place every morning in Antarvedi at the mouth of the Godavari river.  Fisherman who have spent all night out at sea come back before dawn to sell their catch to wholesale buyers.

Each species is sorted, separated into baskets, then dumped onto the concrete landing of the dock.  Wholesale buyers crowd around to evaluate and then the fisherman calls out a price he wants for the batch.  He then drops the price by 10 rupees until someone signals they will go for it.  The man with a pen on the left is essentially a bank, taking deposits and keeping track of accounts for the fisherman.

Once the sale of a batch is complete, the buyer boxes the fish up with ice and drives off to a nearby village to sell them.

 The bigger species get sold individually or in smaller sets.  Maybe these are mackerel?  I wish I knew more about marine fisheries...
